I started thatching as an apprentice in 1994 on the Essex & Suffolk borders. I served a 4 year apprenticeship with an East Anglia Master Thatcher and in 1997 qualified as a Thatcher having successfully completed a course run by the Rural Development Commission at Knuston Hall in Northamptonshire.
Based in North West Essex I am available to work throughout East Anglia in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, or in any other parts of the UK if requested.
I mainly work in Long straw and Water reed which are the two main materials native to East Anglia, but I also work in Combed wheat reed if required.
The Long straw used for thatching is especially grown by a local farmer and harvested by myself in the traditional methods to maintain a high quality of supply. It is also sourced from all over East Anglia. Water reed is harvested from the Norfolk Broads and the Suffolk coast when available and from further afield if needed.
I will carry out any thatching work from advice, repairs, and new ridges to full re-thatches.
